TAMID

TAMID is a nonprofit organization, located on 53 campuses world-wide, that develops the professional skills of undergraduate students through hands-on interaction with the Israeli economy. TAMID aims to train the next generation of top business leaders – and instilling in them a strong and lasting connection to Israel. Israel was chosen because of its startup culture. The country hasore startup companies per capita than any other country in the world and second only to USA in actual numbers. Israel has the 3rd most companies listed on the Nasdaq, after the US and China and one of the largest venture capital industries in the world. TAMID was started in 2008 at the University of Michigan and chapters at Harvard, Berkeley, and Penn State were subsequently added in 2011, making TAMID at Penn State one of the oldest chapters.

My love for TAMID really blossomed after going on the TAMID Fellowship in Summer of 2018. The fellowship is the opportunity to spend 9-weeks in Israel on all expenses paid capstone internship experience. I was able to live and work in Tel Aviv and was an active participant in one of the world’s most vibrant startup ecosystems. I learned about how Israeli entrepreneurship allowed for a tiny country in the desert with little to no natural resources to have the third most companies listed on the NASDAQ. I heard about how Intel transformed an impoverished village into a thriving city by supplying thousands of well-paying jobs. It was in Israel when I truly discovered the innate ability of business to transform lives.
After the fellowship and seeing how successful TAMID is at other universities, I was very excited to revive the chapter here at Penn State. New members participate in an interactive educational program that integrates business principles with Israel’s economic landscape. After completing the education portion of TAMID, members can either choose the fund or consulting track. The consulting track allows students to provide pro-bono consulting for Israeli startups. This allows students to gain hands on, real world business experience. Consulting responsibilities include market research, marketing, market analysis, and business development. For fund, teams conduct equity research and manage a stock portfolio. Members participate in a semester long mock stock portfolio competition and execute stock pitches based on Israeli companies.
We now have 40 active members and meet weekly. We look forward to growing as an organization and as member of the Smeal community.

Saxby’s in the Making

As a Smeal College of Business major, you probably spend a big chunk of your day at the Business building attending classes, meeting with professors, or cramming for exams in the atrium. Last semester you may have even studied in the Blue Chip Bistro, but this semester a new cafe took its place- Saxby’s. Not only does Saxby’s provide a trendy atmosphere with specialty drinks and a variety of food options, it is also completely student run, aligning it with the learning initiatives of the Smeal College of Business.

Saxby’s Experimental Learning Program promotes one student each semester as the Student Cafe Executive Officer or SCEO. This student will have responsibilities such as team development, community outreach initiatives, and cafe financials. In addition to hiring the SCEO, Saxby’s also plans to hire and employ 100 other Penn State students to fill the barista roles. However, Penn State students aren’t just playing a role behind the counter.

Saxby’s turned to some incredibility talented student artists and photographers to make sure the vibe was in tune with Penn State’s student culture. The Penn State themed photos hanging on the walls are the work of senior, Rachel Gross. Rachel is an intern for Penn State Athletics and hopes to pursue a career in the sports or entertainment industry. Rachel said, “I often find myself looking back at the photos I’ve taken during my time at Penn State. The photos allow me to hold on to a piece of Penn State forever.” With the pictures on the wall at Saxby’s, Rachel will also be able to leave her mark on Penn State.

In addition to the iconic Penn State photos, Saxby’s gave Lindsay Kircher, a senior majoring in Art, a blank wall to let her creativity show. Lindsay took a white wall and turned it into an amazing masterpiece that sets the tone of the entire cafe.

With the help of Rachel and Lindsay, Saxby’s created an atmosphere where Penn State students can either take a breather, study with friends, or fuel up before an exam. Completely student run, Saxby’s reflects the academic goals of the Smeal College of Business and provides a way for students to get real life experience before diving into the business world. Whether you’re looking for a mid-day caffeine boost or a quick bite for breakfast, Saxby’s can cover all your needs while you relax  in a trendy atmosphere.
